The South demands an end to immigrant detention

Updated: Dec 11, 2019

In a series of actions held in July across the South, SEIRN, its members, and the Detention Watch Network demanded the shutdown of the region's detention centers and the defunding of the entire detention and deportation system. Resistance Outside and Behind Bars was an effort conceived and led by SEIRN members. We want to say thank you to leaders from Comité de Acción Popular, Comité Popular Somos Raleigh, Comité Popular de Jasper, Comité Popular de Summerville, Comunidades Unidas en Una Voz - CUUV and the Grassroots Alliance for Immigrant Rights for your leadership and vision.

We also want to thank the Detention Watch Network for all the help and support, and also for engaging its members in this collective effort. And THANK YOU to all the groups (Georgia Detention Watch, Shut Down Etowah, La ColectiVa, and many more) that organized the different actions in Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

As a next step to this joint effort, we encourage you to join the #DefundHate campaign being led by Detention Watch Network. This campaign seeks to cut off the flow of money that allows the Department of Homeland Security to deport and detain our community members.
